Fotball - European Power Rankings - 25-31 Oct. 2012

Chelsea's slide down our European Power Rankings continues this week, while Internazionale are the biggest climbers.

It is not just raining for Chelsea at the moment, it is pouring. In a rather fitting torrential deluge in Swansea at the weekend, the Blues dropped yet more points in their Premier League campaign, Pablo Hernandez's late strike and the 1-1 scoreline seeing them cede top spot to rivals Manchester United.

Chelsea may have got the better of United in a thrilling midweek League Cup encounter, but it is the London club's Premier League form that is reflected in our own standings this week, with the Blues shunted another place down the pecking order into eighth. Porto are the team to capitalise after their barnstorming 5-0 win over Maritimo, flip-flopping into seventh.

Otherwise, in the top half of our table, there is little change this week, but with a Champions League round coming up this Tuesday and Wednesday, expect more movement in seven days time.

That said, Italian giants Internazionale are the biggest climbers this week after Andrea Stramaccioni's team came from behind to beat Juventus 3-1 and end the Bianconeri's incredible 49-game unbeaten run in Serie A. Inter jump five places and land in 17th place. Juve manage to stay in 12th.

Paris St-Germain's first defeat of the season - 2-1 against St Etienne - sees the French capital club slip three to 19th while Tottenham's 1-0 home defeat to Wigan - during which Spurs fans booed manager Andre Villas-Boas - means they drop out of the top 20 altogether.

HOW IT WORKS

To determine our Power Rankings, which scientifically analyses hundreds of thousands of matches from the top divisions in all European nations as well as Europa League and Champions League games.

The Index takes into account all matches played over an eight-year period but with recent results carrying more weight than older ones.

The performance of a league's teams in the Champions League and Europa League reflects the rise or fall of the sporting level in that league.

So, for example, if English teams perform well in Europe, all Premier League teams receive a small bonus in their ECI score. The ranking and its predictive power are thus made even more accurate.
